Field Excursions

PRE-MEETING

1. Petrology and Mineralization of the Tanco Rare-Element Pegmatite, Southeastern Manitoba ($50CDN/$30US)

Staff, Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd.

This trip will examine the constitution, mineralogy, and petrology of the Tanco rare-earth element pegmatite at Bernic Lake, east of Lac du Bonnet. Half of the trip is devoted to examination of underground exposures in the mine, the other half will allow participants an opportunity to collect minerals and petrographic samples on mine dumps.

2. Quaternary Geology of Southern Manitoba ($40CDN/$25US)

Erik Nielsen and Gaywood Matile, Manitoba Geological Survey

This trip will examine evidence of glaciation from both the Labradorean and Keewatin sectors of the Laurentide ice sheet, an interglacial/interstadial fossil site, and Holocene deposits. Included will be stops at the West Hawk Lake meteorite impact structure, a variety of sedimentary environments, and discussion of Lake Agassiz history.

3. Structure and Sedimentology of the Seine Conglomerate, Mine Centre Area, Ontario ($40/CDN/$25US)

Dyanna Czeck, Oberlin College, Ohio and Phillip Fralick, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay

This trip will examine sites related to the development and deformational history of a synorogenic sedimentary unit, the Seine Conglomerate. The unit formed along the Archean Wabigoon-Quetico subprovincial boundary in the Rainy Lake region, an area that has sparked interest and controversy among American and Canadian geologists for over a century.

4. Industrial Minerals and Paleozoic Geology of Southeastern Manitoba ($40CDN/$25US)

Jim Bamburak and Ruth Bezys, Manitoba Geological Survey

This trip will visit a peat operation, a granite quarry and the famous Ordovician "Tyndall Stone" quarry at Garson in southeastern Manitoba.

5. Separation Rapids Rare-Element Pegmatite Field ($50CDN/$40US)

Trip Departs 8:00 a.m., Thursday, May 16, 2002 from the Bestwestern Lakeside Inn

C.E. Blackburn, Blackburn Geological Services, Staff of Avalon Ventures Ltd., Champion Bear Resources Ltd., Emerald Fields Resource Corp. and Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd.

This trip will visit locations throughout the Separation Rapids Rare-element Pegmatite field, north of Kenora identified by the Ontario Geological Survey in 1996. Regional geology and properties with tantalum, lithium and rubidium mineralization will be examined.

6. Geology of the Red Lake Camp ($50CDN/$40US)

A. Lichtblau and C.C. Storey , Ontario Geological Survey, Staff of Placer Dome - Campbell Mine and Gold Corp. Red Lake Mine

This trip will examine the surface geology of the prolific Red Lake Gold Camp and visit underground operations of two of the highest grade producers in North America, the Campbell Mine and the Red Lake Mine.
